Australian Council for International Development (ACFID)
ACFID is an independent association of Australian non-government organisations (NGOs) working in the field of international aid and development. ADRA is a signatory to the ACFID Code of Conduct which sets standards on how organisations are managed, how they communicate with the public, and most importantly how they spend the funds they raise. The Code ensures that public confidence is maintained in the way funds are used overseas and in Australia.
MAKE POVERTY HISTORY
ADRA is a member organisation of Make Poverty History, a coalition of NGOs, community groups and celebrities that are part of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty. This worldwide alliance is calling on governments and international decision makers to fulfil their public promise and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a plan to halve global poverty by 2015. The campaign also calls for urgent and meaningful policy change on three critical and inextricably linked areas: trade, debt and aid.
All 191 members states of the United Nations have promised to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The Goals include measurable, time-bound targets. The MDGs are derived from the broader "Millennium Declaration" that was signed in 2000 by all UN member states and include the following:
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6: Combat HIV, AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development
Micah Challenge
ADRA has also partnered with Make Poverty History's sister campaign, Micah Challenge, an alliance of Australian churches and Christian groups. As a global Christian campaign, Micah Challenge aims to deepen churches' engagement with the poor and to help reduce poverty as an integral part of our faith. It is based on the call in Micah 6:8, "What does the Lord require of you? To do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God." Just as Jesus spoke out for the poor, Micah Challenge seeks to provide ways and resources to empower one person or one church to do the same.
