Equal Employment Opportunity Policy
Adventist Development and Relief Agency Australia Ltd (“ADRA”) is committed to the principle of equal employment opportunity (EEO) and freedom from all forms of unlawful discrimination. This EEO policy is based on the principles of equity and justice, consistent with ADRA's fulfilment of its mission and goals.
This EEO policy applies to all applicants for employment and all current employees of ADRA.
ADRA aims to comply with applicable state and federal legislation on discrimination and equal employment opportunity.
The attributes or categories of unlawful discrimination vary between regions, States and countries, and so it is not possible to detail them all in this policy. Specific advice should be obtained where necessary. The categories of unlawful discrimination typically include gender, marital status, pregnancy or potential pregnancy, race or ethnic background, age, carer responsibilities, disability and political or religious belief or activity.
In general terms, ADRA has an obligation to take all reasonable steps to prevent workplace discrimination and to ensure that any discrimination issues are managed in a fair and prompt manner.
Equal employment opportunity means that all ADRA employees and employment applicants have equal access to and enjoy the same opportunities for hiring, professional development and training, compensation, transfer, promotion and advancement and, where relevant, issues relating to leave of absence and termination. All these matters should be determined according to merit.
Whilst equality of opportunity implies the elimination of all forms of discrimination, it is accepted that under certain circumstances discrimination may be lawful and reasonable. For example, because of its historical background and religious affiliation to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, it is appropriate that ADRA may wish to give preference to the employment of persons who are members of the Seventh-day Adventist church and are committed to the philosophy of humanitarian service shared by ADRA and the Church, and who practice a lifestyle consistent with ADRA policies and Seventh-day Adventist beliefs.
