ADRA Responds to Katherine Floods
9th April, 2006
Wahroonga, New South Wales -- The Adventist Development & Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia has allocated an immediate $20,000 to the response effort after the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory was inundated by flood waters.
ADRA Australia will assist with the purchase of white goods and mattresses for uninsured or underinsured families affected by floodwaters in the town. Other needs which are identified in consultation with the Community Services officers in the Northern Territory as either not covered by insurance or government funding packages will also be funded.
Gary Christian, Director of ADRA's National Program, said, In floods such as these it is quite usual for floodwaters to ruin the motors in fridges, freezers or washing machines. Mattresses also need to be thrown out because they simply cannot be cleaned after floodwaters inundate them. We will expand our financial commitment if early assessments indicate that more funds are needed.
ADRA Australia is currently one of the two major charities assisting people affected by Cyclone Larry, working in partnership with Red Cross in Innisfail and the Atherton Tablelands. ADRA has committed up to $100,000 for those affected by the Northern Queensland cyclone.
