Conflict in the Middle East

Lebanon

Following the onset of the Iran conflict on 28 February 2026, hostilities in Lebanon have escalated, leading to significant internal displacement. The conflict has affected displaced more than 700,000 people and has resulted in civilian casualties. So far 538 shelters have opened nationwide to host displaced populations.

ADRA has already begun distributing water to internally displaced people (IDPs) and will extend their work to provide essential Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) support to 432 displaced families. Each targeted family will receive a standard assistance package to support safe water storage, hygiene, and dignity needs. The package includes 10-litre potable water jerry cans, hygiene kits (containing items such as soap, shampoo, laundry powder, bleach, dishwashing liquid, detergents, garbage bags, and sanitisers), and dignity kits with menstrual hygiene supplies, underwear, toiletries, and flashlights with batteries. All households will receive the same package, ensuring equitable access to essential hygiene supplies for displaced families living in shelters or host communities.

Syria

Escalating hostilities in north-east Syria in January 2026 displaced more than 128,000 people, the vast majority women and children. Communities are struggling with limited access to shelter, food, cash assistance, health care, protection, and other essential services. Many areas remain difficult to reach due to insecurity and disrupted infrastructure. At the same time, due to the escalation of violence in Lebanon, Syria is on high alert. People are fleeing in masses from areas under attack, with more than 25,000 mainly Syrian refugee returnees arriving thus far.

ADRA’s initial response included providing cash assistance to struggling families so they can see to their most urgent needs, whether that be food, water, shelter, or accessing medications. Going forward, ADRA is partnering with local organisations to help meet the overwhelming needs at collective shelters. ADRA’s charity partner, Stability Support Foundation, is providing hot meals, distributing goods such as blankets, and providing psychosocial support.

Victorian Bushfires

One person has died, over 300 structures (including homes, businesses, and outbuildings) have been lost, and an estimated 15,000 livestock have died in fires that burned at least 390,000 hectares of the state in January 2026.

Our ongoing response is providing 200 water pods to families to replace water tanks and other water resources that were lost in the fires. This is on the back of our initial response which included partnering with ADRA with local Seventh-day Adventist churches and community members to respond to provide financial assistance, emergency evacuation kits, and psychosocial support.

Ukraine Response

The protracted conflict in Ukraine requires ongoing support for those affected. The project “Psychological Assistance Spaces for Ukrainian Children Affected by War” addresses the urgent need for psychological support among children and adults impacted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The project aims to foster psychological well-being and support the recovery of children and adults affected by war, addressing the profound emotional challenges they face. It seeks to equip students with essential tools to navigate their educational and career paths while restoring access to quality education. By ensuring uninterrupted learning for displaced, vulnerable, and evacuated children, the initiative creates a foundation for resilience and hope in the face of adversity. The project will also include the creation of сatch-up centres to make up for educational lossesCatch-up centres in Ukraine play a critical role in addressing educational losses caused by the ongoing war and displacement of students. These centres provide a safe and supportive environment for children who have faced disruptions in their learning due to conflict, school closures, or forced relocations. By offering tailored educational programs, psychological support, and access to digital learning tools, they help bridge learning gaps, ensure continuity of education, and promote emotional well-being.

As well as supporting children, the project will also deliver psychological assistance to teachers who provide educational services and parents who raise children in extremely difficult war conditions. The project will operate in schools in LvivBila TserkvaBucha, Kherson, and Dnipro.
